Calling to the priesthood

'Towards the end of my years at the lycée the people around me thought that I would choose the priesthood. As for me, I did not give it a thought. I was quite sure that I would remain a layman. Committed to be sure, determined without any dount to participate in the life of the Church; but a priest, certainly not.'

"He quotes the epistle to the Hebrews: 'One does not take the honour upon himself!' (Heb 5:4). In this domain, one does not choose; one is chosen....

'After my father's death, which occurred in February 1941, I gradually became aware of my true path. I was working at the factory and devoting myself, as far as the terrors of the occupation allowed, to my taste for literature and drama. My priestly vocation took shape in the midst of all that, like an innfer fact of unquestionable and absolute clarity. The following year, in the autumn, I knew that I was called. I could see clearly what I had to give up and the goal that I had to attain,'without looking back'. I would be a priest.'"
